Memorization tips
- 1
Purify your intention
Memorize the Quran for Allah, and keep in mind the virtue of learning His Book and living by it.
- 2
Begin with a steady portion
Choose an amount you can keep every day, even if it is small. Continuity matters more than memorizing a great deal and then stopping.
- 3
Read the verses first
Read the passage several times from the mushaf, and learn the meanings of the words and verses before you start to memorize.
- 4
Listen to one reciter
Repeated listening helps the verses settle. While memorizing a passage, stay with a single reciter.
- 5
Repeat the verse
Read the verse from the mushaf several times, then try to recite it from memory, and repeat until you can recite it without looking.
- 6
Connect the verses
After memorizing each verse, join it to what comes before and after. Do not stop at memorizing verses in isolation.
- 7
Understand the meaning
Understanding a verse and its context helps you recall it, and makes the memorization deeper and more secure.
- 8
Review before you memorize something new
Make review a fixed part of your daily plan, and do not let new memorization take the time that belongs to review.
- 9
Review at intervals
Review what you have memorized after a short while, then after some days, then on a regular cycle. Spaced repetition helps it stay firm.
- 10
Test yourself
Close the mushaf and try to recite without help. Note the places you miss and review those, rather than only repeating the whole passage.
- 11
Watch for similar verses
When verses resemble one another, compare them and mark the word or phrase that differs. That reduces mixing them up.
- 12
Use the same mushaf
Staying with one mushaf helps you remember where the verses sit on the page.
- 13
Do not move on too quickly
If a passage is not yet firm, increase your review before moving to a new one.
- 14
Recite what you have memorized in prayer
Reciting what you have memorized in salah helps you review it and keep it firm.
- 15
Do not despair when you forget
Forgetting some of what you memorized is to be expected. Steady review is an essential part of memorizing the Quran.
A simple rule for the memorizer
Memorize a little → repeat often → connect the verses → review steadily → test yourself.
